Available exclusively at upcoming tour dates supporting Unknown Mortal Orchestra as well as via the Lost Map webshop and Bandcamp, the Avoidance EP is a special super-limited-edition cassette-only release by Makeness, AKA critically-acclaimed electronic sonic explorer Kyle Molleson. It follows the release on Lost Map last year of an exclusive session EP, written and recorded on the isle of Eigg as part of the label’s residency programme V I S I T ▲ T I O N S, as well as a subsequent blistering full-band live performance by Makeness on Eigg as part of Lost Map’s Howlin’ Fling festival in 2022. The title track from the Avoidance EP is available to stream and share now.

Currently based in London, but raised in the Outer Hebrides and south-west England and previously based in Leeds and Edinburgh, Kyle’s 2018 debut album for Secretly Canadian Records Loud Patterns was hailed by Pitchfork as “dark and dissonant electronic rock that captures the thrum of cities and the solitude of the country”. His V I S I T ▲ T I O N S session EP was a collaboration with Gus Beamish-Cook – a Suffolk-born synth-addict who previously made mind-warping dance-pop rhythms as Bewilderbeast and now plays in the Makeness live band, as well as collaborates on another project with Kyle called Small Car NRG. The Avoidance EP sees Kyle continue in a similar vein of working collaboratively and in rural seclusion, by recording again with Beamish-Cook, as well as drummer George Rothman and guitarist George Nicholls (who also releases music on Lost Map with his project The GN Band).

About the Avoidance EP, Kyle says: “Having spent a long time making music by myself I was hankering after playing in a proper band again rather than sitting in front of a computer. Some of the songs were already written but were waiting for the right players to come along and get stuck into them. We did exactly that and recorded these tracks in one week at Black Byre Studios in the Scottish Borders. We spent four days rehearsing and writing extra parts/instrumentation and then recorded them all live in the same room with no click tracks. It felt really special at the time, being able to really focus the playing rather than the editing that comes with making a lot of electronic music.”
